Another option is to not try to draw the symbols with wx, but rather 
make them in a drawing program (InkScape is very nice, BTW), and then 
just use bitmaps in your program. I don't know if OGL handles bitmaps, 
but FloatCanvas will.

and your instinct to not re-invent this wheel is a good one -- I'll bet 
you can get OGL or FloatCanvas to work for you.
