The wx 2.8 packages install side-by-side with the 2.6 packages, so any
existing apps that are built with 2.6 should continue working with no
problems.

Not really, it is entirely a political issue. The Debian maintainer and
some members of the wx core developers are having a cold war, and not
updating wx in Debian is just one of the weapons that were deployed.
