Repainting a wx.TextCtrl

Python 2.5.1

wxversion.getInstalled() returns ['2.8-gtk2-unicode', '2.6-gtk2-unicode']
I assume the most recent is used by default?

I'm developing on Ubuntu 7.10, but I'd want this to be cross platform.

However, I think I could live without the custom painting.  So I think I'll
just forget about it.
