I would suggest that you look at Firebird SQL.

It is supported by SA, I am just switching over from another ORM to SA.

I only use it on Windows (just remember to turn on "Force Write"), did a 
bit of testing on Ubuntu.

On my dev machine I use the full server, so I can access the db using 
tools like IBExpress as well as with the application.

For deployment I use the embedded version of FB, but this one only 
allows one process to access the db.

With the latest version (2.1) they do have MacOSX builds - IIRC this 
support is relatively new.
