Well, this discussion seems to be premised on the idea that WebKit  
needs 1GB of RAM, which it doesn't. ;-) You'll certainly get some  
performance benefits by having it, but that's obvious, as you'll  
almost always get better performance system-wide when you upgrade  
your RAM and CPU (or HDD if you move up to SATA, etc.).

At the same time, I think it's worth noting that heavily optimizing  
for old computers also means not spending time adding new features  
that all users are requesting, so memory and resource optimization  
are great ideas but the last step in the process. Of course, anyone  
who wants to help optimize WebKit, Mozilla, etc. in these regards is  
free to help out. :-)
