To lead you to the source, you have two options:
- You can join the Debian PAPT (Python Application Package Team). It is
a friendly group of debian python developpers. You can meet them online
at the channel #debian-python at irc.debian.org Their website is
http://python-apps.alioth.debian.org/policy.html

- There is also MOTU (Masters Of the Universe) for Ubuntu who package
anything for Ubuntu. Their channel is #ubuntu-motu at irc.ubuntu.com
Their website is https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MOTU. Also look at
http://doc.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/packagingguide/C/index.html
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MOTU/Mentoring

In general ubuntu-motu is a bit more open for teaching and learning to
package. The advantage of PAPT is that your package will be pushed in
all Debian derivates including Ubuntu automatically. If you first
package for Ubuntu, you will still have to push the package into Debian
yourself.

Ubuntu is running the Open Week (still one day left). There were some
classes about packaging. The last session of saturday might interest
you: "Patching Packages" https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuOpenWeek There is
an Ubuntu open week every 6 months with every release of Ubuntu. Next
one is Hardy in april 2008.

When you are both the author and the packager, things are more easy.

Good luck,
Stani
