SetToolTip does not work on all windows?

In a wxPython application running in Windows XP I tried to attach a tooltip
to a wx.Choice.
Not only no tooltip appears on this window, but when the application is
closed the system signals an 'unknown error'.
Did I try to do what is in wxPython merely impossible, or I forget
something?
