Thanks, Andrea. I suppose I should try this on some other systems, and 
see if the results are similar.

Interesting -- I wonder why? In any case, this doesn't look like enough 
performance to matter in most cases, but I'm doing some work with some 
pretty large images in the future -- I'll keep this in mind of wx seems 
slow.
