I use ubuntu/kubuntu/xubuntu on daily basis, and I confirm that is
trouble-free (almost, because of user dumbness) but I am definetly happy with
it.

I use eric to make my small python projects, and randomly use wxglade to
define some interface prototype, but still I prefer to write down all the
code to build the GUI, or hack the code created by wxglade

I liked SPE and Wingware under windows, but I code mostly in linux, and feel
quite comfortable with eric.

I would give also a try to Ulipad

http://cheeseshop.python.org/pypi/UliPad/3.6

but in these last days I keep having errors of server being down (not
cheeseshop but wiki.woodpecker.org.cn)
