Hi Jorma,
My copy of Win98 (SE) is:
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 98 (32-bit)
OS Version: 4.10.2222 A (Second Edition)
(all critical updates have been installed.)
DW reports your version as:
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 98 (32-bit)
OS Version: 4.10.1998 (Gold)
So we are running different O/S versions.
There used to be a roll up service pack for Win98 here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows98/downloads/corporate.asp
It included the Y2K and several other hot fixes and service packs for
Win98. They used to have a roll up service pack that they called "System Update".
The site seems to have been changed and is being re-directed,
since I visited it last. Not sure if it's been moved or re-moved.
You might need to search a bit to see if a "roll up", "service pack"
or "System Update" for Win98 is still available. They used to make
this available for IT/System Administrator types who were updating
PC's in a corporate environment, vs going to the Windows update
site and updating a system on-line.
If it is the original Win98 and hasn't been patched with the latest
hot fixes available, I might try that. It may or may not change
anything. Difficult to say without knowing what the root cause of
the problem is. But if all the later O/S'es work, updating what you
have to the latest that was available may give you the best chance.
I still use Win98 SE myself daily. But it does have a declining market share:
http://marketshare.hitslink.com/report.aspx?qprid=2
Makes it difficult to support and fix, and more so now that MS has
dropped their support of it. The development tools/libraries also move on to
support new OS features. Not everything ends up being backwards compatible.
And most of any development interest will probably be focused in on areas where
the market share is advancing, not declining.
Not to say that it can't be made to work under Win 98. Just a matter of
how much time one is willing to invest in making it go.
