As said before, you're looking at a whole lot of work for not much final 
result.  Unless, of course, you want to do this for fun more than 
anything else. (Well, it _does_ look like fun...)

You may want to look at a portable mail client instead (on an USB key 
for exemple).  You'd be able to use it on any (mostly Windows) PC 
without changing anything on the host.
