yes -- in what way is it overkill???

If you really want to be MS -intolerant, then use PyObjC on the Mac, or 
maybe pyGTK, which works on Windows, but isn't really native there.

wx will give you native apps on the three major platforms: Windows, 
OS-X, and GTK-based *nix. If that's what you want, it's a great way to go.
