toolbar sizers???

hello, 
I've been putting some controls in a toolbar's boxsizer and the sizer isn't working like I expect it to work... for example things don't expand if I specify a sizer item to EXPAND or if I set the proportion for example. Do sizers act differently in toolbars or should I expect the same behavior as if I were using sizers in a panel for example?
