listctrl SetColumnWidth faild

I'm using a listctrl on windows 2003, the style of the listctrl is report|virtual. When execute SetColumnWidth(col, -2), it failed with the message "...an integer is required...", but I can promise the parameter 'col' IS an integer. How come? Anybody have an idea of this?
