OT, but what the heck:

I know nothing of VMWARE or Ubuntu, but I have an idea:

1) does anything else work with the net? even ping?

(try: "ping google.com")

2) if so, the it's possible that Firefox is trying to use IPv6, and 
VMWare doesn't like that:

go to:

about:config

in Firefox

put "IPv" in the filter

See what you get. I get:
network.dns.disableIPv6   true boolean true

if it's false, that may be your problem.
