I'm not quite following the details but you should be able to do this. 
We've got an pp here that uses a couple of wxMpl plot panels, in a 
sizer, and swaps them out as the user changes things.

make a simple an example app as you can, and post it here, we could be 
able to fix it for you.

Also, try using just a plane wx.Panel in your tests, I suspect that 
wxMpl has nothing to do with your issues.
