It's a good second choice. The first choice is the relatively new  and 
unadvertised FloatCanvas list:

I can see how that could be useful.

No magic, but I can provide tech support. Also, we're in the midst of 
re-factoring the GUI mode code, based on suggestion and donated code of 
Christian Blouin. That will make it easier to add different modes like that.

Sorry for the slow reply, I've been out of town, and away form email for 
over a week!
