Oh well, I downloaded the latest tarball instead, and found the setup.py 
trick was:

extra_path = EXTRA_PATH,

this puts everything inside EXTRA_PATH, in site-packages.

It also installs a *.pth file, which I haven't figured out how to suppress.

Maybe this isn't a good idea anyway.
