wxversion on mac broken?

hello,
	I've installed wxpython 2.8.7.1 (from the binary disk image) but  
wxversion.getInstalled() just returns "'2.8-mac-unicode'".   
wxversion.ensureMinimal on any subversion higher than just '2.8'  
fails, like '2.8.1'.
   I have also noticed huge discrepancies between the same wxpython  
code on Linux and on a mac (the mac version being broken).  Is this  
usual?  Everything from bitmapbuttons not  working or being laid out  
correctly to wx.Frame not working correctly with wx.SetBackgroundColour.
