problems with small wxWidgets Sample

Hi,

I am working on a MacPro running Leopard.  I installed wxWidgets 2.8.7  
using macports, and I tried the
sample in Chapter 2 of the book "Cross-Platform GUI Programming with  
wxWidgets". I got it to compile and link.
However, when I run the the program I don't get the menu.  I got the  
the message in the status bar, and
the title on the frame, but the window itself is empty, there is no  
menu at all.  Also I can't move or resize the
frame.  From reading the book it seems to me that wxFrame is resizable.
Has anyone experienced this behavior?
