Expat (XML) namespace support

Is there any reason the Expat XML parser is created without namespace 
support? I was thinking of starting to use XLink and XPointer in my XML and 
it would be desirable to have automatic parsing of namespace declarations.

Also, is there any plan to update Expat to a newer version? 
http://expat.sourceforge.net/ shows a 2.0.1 available, and the readme in wx 
2.8.7 shows it using Expat 1.95.6. It looks like the newer version has some 
bug fixes.
