can MinGW compile for Linux?

Hello,
actually my question is not directly related to WxWidgets, but still
this newsgroup seems to give the best answers concerning MinGW.
So, I'd simply like to know if I can use MinGW to compile programs for
Linux as well?
My understanding is that I cannot, but I hope that somebody proves me
wrong. As far as I see, MinGW includes a (cross)compiler as well as
the w32api which allow me to compile programs FOR Windows on both
Linux or Windows HOST systems. Is this correct?
What I would like, is to compile the same source, making w32api calls,
FOR Linux. Is this impossible?
(I know that I can combine MinGW and WxWidgets for this purpose, but
my question is whether I can avoid the WxWidgets overhead.)
Thanks
B.W.
