You are right. Best might be really to completely ownerdraw the menu from 
bottom up.
The workaround with the <bitmap>...</bitmap> in the XRC unfortunately won't 
work correctly.
Menu items without a bitmap show the text twice.
While the toplevel labels are not variable in size nor in color the 
extension to insert font / color
in xh_menu.cpp seem to be useless. Probably nobody will like it in this way.
And, sorry but I am experienced enough to rewrite such a component (yet?).

OK, let's stay with the existing menu.
