I haven't worked with 2.8 yet but I believe the book is worth getting
(I think it's available free online if I recall correctly). Its quite useful
for understanding the approach to solving problems using wxwindows
and is great for getting started. For actual work, the online reference
is wonderful and is probably all you'll ever need (except for the news
group occasionally which is also very helpful).
