Still relevant? - Cross-Platform GUI Programming with WxWidgets

Hiya chaps,

Having slogged my way through making my first serious GUI using MFC
(original spec wanted Windows Forms, but I negotiated it to MFC) I'm now
looking around at alternatives such that when I am next tasked to write
a GUI I can make a case for letting me choose the tool myself.

WxWidgets certainly looks like it's worth investigating. I note that the
only big chunky paper reference manual I can find, "Cross-Platform GUI
Programming with WxWidgets", was written for v2.6.something, and the
current version is 2.8.0

Is the book still worth getting, or should I just hack around with it
and look to online references?
