[Mac, 2.8.2] Handling menu open event

Hi,

The docs say that menu events can only be processed by a menu bar's
frame.

If I would still like to install a handler over a menu which is not the
frame, is there a way I can do this?
Basically at some point when a user edits a text edit control I'd like
to add another handler for the current menu bar, catch the open event
and react to it. I want to remove this handler as the first event is
handled.

Can this be done? If so, do I need to install a handler for the menu bar
or for each menu?
