Font path

I have the same problem in aUCBLogo.
At the moment I use an environment variable to get the font path,
but this is not very elegant,
because the user has to set it at sometime, best before using Logo.

Is there no platform-independent way to retrieve the font path?
Or at least, can anyone post such routines for Windows and X11?
