ToolTips in a ToolBar are strange

I am a new user of wxPython and I think it is great, but I just put a
toolbar in my first real program and I want tooltips so I put then in
and they work, except I don't understand why they work the way they do.
To get the tooltip to show I need to click on the tool bar or a control
( button in my case) in the tool bar before they show up. To me it is to
late to see the tool tip after you click the button when you need it is
before. I checked another program that I saw a posting for that said
tool tips where working fine and it worked the same way. Am I missing
something?
