[wx-discuss] Hoyle reviews wxWidgets

Hi
=
I was referring to the fact that .RC files don't use sizers, and .nib files=
only have a very limited layout system, which is fine when only using mac =
- as the control layout there is fixed and the only thing to care about is =
the length of strings (kind of similar to our old layout system). So while =
some wx dialog editors offer .RC input (and we could try to add the same fo=
r .nib) files, it doesn't give you a good wx-dialog, because the sizers are=
not used.
=
I absolutely agree on the RAD aspect
=
Best,
=
Stefan

Hi,

yes, I have about the same sentiment, he had the same topic at last years=
MacHack conference. But lets just take the good points he has and try to a=
ddress them, and we could perhaps havea wiki page with the most heard criti=
c points in reviews and our responses, eg as why importing .RC and .nib fil=
es is not a good idea to start with (not to say they are not a useful funct=
ion for a fast start port)
Actually, outside of the fact that I think he labors over the MFC point, I=
think he has a pretty solid assessment of how most people coming in off th=
e streets would see our project. If people are concerned about why they can=
't/shouldn't import .RC and .nib files, for example, it's mostly because wx=
doesn't offer them a clear (i.e. de-facto standard) alternative. A lot of =
people clearly prefer RAD-style development tools, but we don't have a tool=
like the ones that people are used to. Why is that? =
IMHO, putting up a wiki page saying things such as that you shouldn't use =
nib-style utilities with wx apps rather hurts more than it helps. In a roun=
d-about way, it says to potential users that wx doesn't do RAD. Problem is,=
most of our competitors do, and that's a pretty big factor for many new us=
ers, if not a deal-breaker. =
Thanks,
Kevin

Maybe some of you saw that but I missed it... harsh review! He has a lot=
of good points but I think the conclusion is a bit hyped....
