wxGTK 2.8.x bg color of single line text ctrls

There have been some more reports lately of not being able to change the 
bg color of some widgets on wxGTK and we've just given our standard 
answer of "some themes don't support it."  But while trying to verify 
that deactivating the theme and using the default I found that you still 
can't set the bg color of single line text ctrls (multi-line work ok.) 
Does anybody know why?
