I can split it in different pieces for the different ports, if it helps.

However the common part (and stattextcmn.cpp in particular) is a good 
1000 lines still.

BTW I've just posted the definitive version of the patch tested under 
wxMSW and wxGTK to:

Hopefully 2.9 branch will be created soon (IMHO development has slowed 
down a lot since 2.7 - i.e. since stable branch has been created)...
