I agree such control would be helpful. Image picker could be nice with some
virtualisation to create customized pickers on top of it (like creation of the
visible image on-demand for browsing networked images). It could be also nice
to have subcontrols on 'icons' so you could for example have list of stills
for mpegs and controls for preview mode once some icon is selected (I know, I
know, too much).

The question is, do we have enough time and resources for it to be added
stable before 2.8? I really don't want to have unexpected extra doubled and
tripled testing time because unplanned features are added or enhanced in last
minute before release.
