This is a stable release announcement. Something similar to 2.5.0
release announcement would be probably better, with some even more added
warnings on future API changes, perhaps citing some far reaching work
that has yet to be done.


To me it sounds like we are going for a release today or this weekend.
Did I understand that right?

To me it appears quite sudden. But as I'm mostly in 2.6 fixing mode
right now (intending to push for a 2.6.4 at some point soon), I don't
have much anything to say about release dates as long as API/ABI changes
is very clear and I can do some of my bigger CVS HEAD work for 2.6.1
time. I don't foresee to get around working on bigger code changes in
HEAD for a couple weeks yet.
So if others think we are ready for a very soon release, I have no
objections.
I do have a couple patches to get in before though (hi Tim!). Getting to
those in a bit.
