I think this is the key thing. I'm almost tempted to suggest
we don't install the .so files (& equivalent elsewhere). Certainly
we should resist it being pushed into distributions, and flag heavy
warnings up on the website. May be "make install" should say
"DO NOT COMPILE ANY PROGRAMS YOU CARE ABOUT AGAINST THIS LIBRARY"
or something.
